Our Lion
"I was the lion." And as Shasta gaped with open mouth and said nothing, the Voice continued. "I was the lion who forced you to join with Aravis. I was the cat who comforted you among the houses of the dead. I was the lion who drove the jackals from you while you slept. I was the lion who gave the Horses the new strength of fear for the last mile so that you should reach King Lune in time. And I was the lion you do not remember who pushed the boat in which you lay, a child near death, so that it came to shore where a man sat, wakeful at midnight, to recieve you.""Then it was you who wounded Aravis?"
"It was I."
"But what for?"
"Child," said the Voice, "I am telling you your story, not hers. I tell no one any story but his own."
"Who are you?" asked Shasta.
"Myself," said the Voice, very deep and low so that the earth shook: and again "Myself," loud and clear and gay: and then the third time "Myself," whispered so softly you could hardly hear it, and yet it seemed to come from all round you as if the leaves rustled with it.
Shasta was no longer afraid that the Voice belonged to something that would eat him, nor that it was the voice of a ghost. But a new and different sort of trembling came over him. Yet he felt glad too.
This passage from "The Horse and His Boy" (the 3rd book from The Chronicles of Narnia) brought me to tears last night as I read it. I thought it was just such a beautiful picture of who God is to us. The Lion, Aslan, was there for Shasta right from the beginning and He never left him, even though Shasta did not recognize Him. He guided and protected Shasta the whole way, He never left him on his own. I was so moved by that. I felt like the Lord was speaking to me saying "I was the One who placed you in this situation" or "I was the One who guided you in that direction" and "I was the One who protected you from this danger"....."I've been there all along, why have you ever doubted Me? Why can't you trust Me? How do you miss Me?" I think I too often forget or brush off things that the Lord does for me. I don't seem to recognize Him when He's right beside me or right in front of me until after the fact. I'm so thankful that God never forsakes us even though we often fail to see Him. He wants to take care of us and He does, every single day of our lives. And Praise His Name for that!! So, as we welcome in this new year, stop and take a moment and Thank HIM for all He has done for us in the past and Praise Him for what He will continue to do in the future. What an AWEsome God we serve!
